Iranian ambassador heckled at the Ateneo, Madrid

Iranian ambassador heckled at the Ateneo, Madrid
From the technical point of view this was an awkward story to cover. The first problem was that I was the only journalist cover the story inside the Ateneo, although there were a couple of other photographers taking photos. So I stood out like a sore thumb. And even when I managed to "blend" in the walls the noise from the D300 made sure I attracted attention. But then it was the D300 that made it possible for me to take the photos in the first place; and there was no option of using flash here.

As for the politics of the event, I'll always remember this event as a sad day in democracy.

World Naked Bike Ride Day in Madrid

http://www.demotix.com/news/354883/world-naked-day-madrid

Excuse the expression, but it was pissing down with rain. By the time the cyclists arrived at Cibeles, after removing their clothes in a side street,  it started raining like crazy. The metering was all over the place and the focusing was way out. Many photographers were complaining about the conditions. I simply set the camera on CH (high speed rate) and just aimed at moving cyclists and fired. In many images you can see the rain drops on the lens, for example the image on this post.

A tourist day out in Madrid?

Trying to be a tourist on home territory is not easy; trying not to be a photojournalist is even worse. My girlfriend and I tried to do both on this mid week holiday in Madrid on the 11 June 2009.

Pro Israel demo January 2009

Pro Israel a relative small pro Israle demo in front of the embassy but of course a committee crowed. It was difficult to get into the crowd because it was a static demo. There was a heavy police presence from all directions leading to the embassy. Rumour had it the anti-Israel supporter were joining the demo. Anyway the police were stopping anyone that looked middle eastern and not Jewish or simply looking shoddy from a late night out. At the end every thing went well i.e. quiet. Lessons from the event. Look around you 360 degrees.

Demonstration

Gaza Demonstration in Madrid 11-91-2009 Apart from leaving early and knowing where things are happening these are things I've learnt. Getting in the crowd gave me access to close up shots that might not have been available from the side. But it could be dangerous restrictive and difficult to move on to an other location. Try not to get cornered which would make it difficult to move on. Knowing the area well one can anticipate pictures. With fast moving scenery and shots that come into view for a fraction of a second, letting the camera automatically handle the number crunching was quite helpful.
